Traffic Snarls

24 Mar

The new one-ways in Ameerpet area brought the traffic to a deadlock at many circles. I was out on road between 10.30am and 1.00pm, which is supposed to be relatively low traffic time. I experienced big jams where people take a u-turn off a one way. That led to backed up jams in other circles too. People who are uninformed had to try out a few alternatives, thus increasing the traffic. Overall, the first working day after the new one-way traffic rules is not that encouraging.

New one-way routes in city

23 Mar

Hyderabad doesn’t have that many one-way stretches like, say Bangalore. But now the traffic police introduced a couple of one way stretches close to the place I live. These new rules are in effect from 10am this morning. When I went out today, I had to go find alternate routes at a couple of places. Even though it increases my travel a bit, I like the new one ways. The only problem is that there is no good alternate route for a couple of roads. I am sure there will be a few changes in the near future based on traffic flows in these new one-ways.

Helping hand to weavers

17 Mar

Chilkur Balaji temple in Hyderabad is popular in many ways. The temple doesn’t take monetary offerings from visitors and all visitors are treated alike. No concept of VIP visitors. Today, I spotted an interesting news item about the temple. The organizers of the temple are planning to enforce a dress code during weekends. It is a very simple dress code. Visitors should wear clothing made of handlooms (hand woven textiles.) This code would indirectly benefit the weavers in this area, who are in tough economic situation right now. Enforcing a dress code may look too much, but I fully support such an idea. If more and more places and outfits encourage handlooms, the local weavers will have a better financial situation.

The new airport and the closure of old one.

08 Mar

The new airport in Hyderabad is about to open in about ten days and there are several opinions on whether the old airport should be closed. As per the official agreement (between Govt. of India and GMR, the builders of the airport) all air traffic in and out of Hyderabad must be from the new airport. But now people raise doubts and issues about that agreement.

My personal view is that the old airport should not be used for any passenger traffic. There are many reasons for believing so.

  • Unless you put your weight behind the new infrastructure, you are not letting it take off. A divided option now makes the life of infrastructure providers (airlines, security, ground traffic control, transportation, travel agents and so on) miserable.
  • If the reachability of the new airport is an issue, then press the government for better infrastructure. There is a potential to make it well connected. The old airport, being in the middle of the city, has no option to improve its reachability.
  • Currently, the city’s road infrastructure gets clogged whenever a VIP arrives at the old airport. Even political people like ministers give a lot of trouble to general public when they travel to old airport. The new airport makes life of a common man better in Secunderabad, Begumpet, Panjagutta and its surroundings.
  • Disruptive changes are needed to solve infrastructure problems. The new Imliban bus station in Hyderabad solved several infrastructure problems by moving out of the main city in the past.So would this new airport. People may argue that there are satellite bus stations like Jubiliee, but air traffic management is not as easy as road transportation.

The only issue I see with the new airport is the reliable and on time transportation of people and goods. In reality, the new airport, about 40km from my home, may take less time to reach than the old airport, which is 6km away. The bottlenecks for the old airport are bigger and getting worse by the day. If the transportation infrastructure in inadequate, then we should press the government to make it better. Once you start using the new airport, things should get settled.
Disclaimer: I have no real estate or other financial interests in and around the new airport :-). It is just that I want better quality of life in the city.

Kids’ passports

06 Mar

Spurthi and Surya got their renewed passports. Surya’s passport arrived late last week and today we got Spurthi’s passport. Interestingly, it seems the police inquiry, mandatory for adults, is a post process for children. Surya’s police inquiry is done on Sunday and Spurthi’s is yet to happen. Overall, the passport renewal process is smooth.

Sun Tech Days Day03

01 Mar

This year’s Day 03 of Sun Tech Days, the community day, is better than last year. Ian Murdock‘s talk is a good curtain raiser for a great day. I initially planned to roam around in all the tracks, but the continuous high activity in OpenSolaris day didn’t let me do that. This year, the attendance is close to a total of 300+ and we had a sustained crowd of 150+ most of the time. Sunay‘s talk on Project Crossbow brought up some very good real life questions from the audience. So did the talks on Cluster technologies and virtualization. The community for sure is catching up here.
We also had a session of HOSUG at the end of the day. At this time, we are inviting memberships to HOSUG. If you are interested, please sign up using the participation instructions here. Help this community grow!

Bye Bye Bookshop

29 Feb

The street-side (curb side) bookshops are iconic in India’s print industry. You normally find two types of such book shops: the ones that sell daily/periodical material like news papers, weeklies and other magazines; the ones that sell (often pirated or used) books on the curb side.

For more than six years after I relocated to India, one single book store (of the first kind) primarily served my newspaper and magazine purchases in Hyderabad. This is the one at S. R. Nagar circle off Umesh Chandra statue. Today is the last day of that book store, because their lease is expiring and they are not renewed.

This shop is so convenient for me that I used to go there by bicycle or scooter. The best part is that there are no traffic signals in either route from home. About five times a week (when I am in town) I used to go to this store to purchase print materials. I am a very regular early morning customer for them. Going there is as regular as my morning glass of chocolate milk.

I am going to miss this shop from tomorrow. The friendly smile of the shop owner, his 6.00am activity in that block and the occasional exchange of his concerns and pains. All of them. Interestingly, I don’t know his name and he doesn’t know mine. We always greeted each other with a smile. I am going to miss him. Bye Bye!

Railway Budget 2008

26 Feb

Read synopsis of railway budget 2008 introduced today. Given that we have an election year, the budget is made attractive enough. Unfortunately, the state of Andhra Pradesh gets (the usual) step motherly treatment this year too. The state gets no good benefits in new trains or infrastructure improvements.

Good:

  • Reduction in fares
  • Infrastructure improvements
  • Emphasis on safety
  • Improved ticketing (cell phones, etc.)
  • Reduced fright charges for certain types of fuel

Bad:

  • Additional berths in three tier, making life more miserable
  • New concessions have a potential to clog the already busy travel networks, especially during peak holiday season.

Overall, it is a good budget. People in Andhra may still have to suffer in busy routes like Hyderabad-Bangalore, Hyderabad-Visakhapatnam and other internal routes.

Surya in a chess tournament

25 Feb

In the last few months, Surya developed interest in Chess. He wanted to participate in a local chess tourney. His school teacher, B. K. Ravi, works with Dronacharya Chess Academy (DCA.) DCA conducted a weekend chess tourney on 23rd and 24th. Surya participated in the event as a non-member.

The event is conducted at Vasavi Club, opposite Sensation Theater in Hyderabad. The tourney is well planned and well organized. Being still novice, Surya managed two points from 5 games. He got good exposure though, playing with kids from different schools.
