Deccan Chargers Win IPL 2009

24 May

Wow! What a match it is! It swung between the two teams (Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers) and finally Deccan Chargers won the final.

One of my coworkers is mentioning that the team is the most underestimated one before the event begun. Given the number of endorsements the team got, that observations seems to be true. At the end, the team that barely made it to the semi-finals in the fourth slot won the event.

The teams didn’t score too many flashy runs, but it is an enjoyable match for the bowling and fielding performances of both the teams.

Congratulations Chargers!

ShahRukh sends Shilpa out

20 May

Well, its figurative. ShahRukh’s Knight Riders send Shilpa’s Rajasthan Royals out of the IPL semifinal race in the just concluded match. Both these teams have packed bags. Now the race is on between 5 other teams, with Mumbai Indians already out of the tourney.

The first test match

16 Dec

The first test match between India and England is a very good one. Both teams have put in their best efforts. England dominated in about 9 of of the 14.5 sessions, but India finally walked away with the match. I got a glimpse of the match, especially Shewag’s batting, on Sunday afternoon. A very nice watch.

Hyderabad 10K Run 2008

30 Nov

The Hyderabad 10K Run & Half Marathon this morning is a huge success. I was a little tired during the previous week and wanted to skip the event, but Spurthi expressed strong interest on the previous night. So I did a last minute registration for Spurthi, Surya and myself. Surya opted out of the event though. Here is our gear check on the previous night.

From 10krun2008

This morning we reached People’s Plaza, the venue for the event, by 5.10am and watched the start of the Half Marathon. Spurthi’s classmates came a bit later and we waited through the proceedings. The star attraction of the day is patriotic songs by singer Karunya. Closely followed are the songs by Aadil and warm up session by Dinaz. The event is started by the Chief Minister of the State, Dr. Y. S. Rajasekar Reddy. Other popular personalities during the event are House Speaker Suresh Reddy, movie actor Venkatesh, movie actor Sunil, etc. Producer Suresh Babu is the most active of the lot, roaming on the streets and cheering people.

The traditional Health & Fitness theme of Hyderabad 10K Runs of the past took a turn towards Patriotism this year. The Hyderabadis’ solidarity with Mumbaikars and rest of the country during the tough times is very evident in acts and words of the gathering. Such a good turnout to a public event within days of Mumbai attacks means people want to show their unity and they don’t get deterred by acts intended to induce fear. Here is an example:

From 10krun2008

The crowd is huge. Once the run started, it took us more than 20 minutes to head to the track from the venue. The streets are filled with people all the way. The organizers ran out of water supplies through the first half of the track. Closer to the end, the amenities improved. The local music bands and country drum players have setup special booths through the entire track. Enthusiastic runners took short breaks to dance at the music bands.

With the streets full of people, the run turned out to be a walk rather. It took us a bit more than 2 hours to complete the 10K distance. A very pleasant and meaningful morning indeed!

Sports Day @ School

23 Nov

Meridian School celebrated its Sports Day on Saturday. This year, the venue is shifted to Gachibowli stadium. Our family carpooled with Padmaja’s family and reached there on time. The stadium is very well maintained and presented a very nice turf for kids to present their talent. Some of the finals are held during the event itself.

Rightly so, the programs are centered around health, fitness, nature, wildlife and sports. The themes chosen are excellent and the costumes are top class. I am sure that a lot of practice hours went into the preparation. The results obviously demonstrated those efforts. The event started on time and very much ended on the spot. Very good time keeping by the organizers.

Surya won bronze medal in the kangaroo race conducted at the venue. He is very happy. Spurthi participated in the Grand Finale program by being part of the hockey team. Amulya and Varun participated in their respective events.
It is a nice family evening watching kids participate and perform. Here is the evening in pics:

Even though I shot about 200 pictures, I realized the limitations of my digital camera’s 4x optical zoom and its light sensitivity. That tells a lot about the scope and scale of the event. Most of the post-dusk photos are a washout, but no worries.

What a January

31 Jan

January usually is a month of catching up from year end holidays. This year though, January is full of activity in many fronts.

  • Technology
  • India
  • Sports
    • India Cricket team stops record winning streak of Australia, again.
    • A Tennis Grandslam final without Federer, after a long time.

Hope the rest of the year is also active like this…

The new lows

08 Jan

The aggression displayed by Australia cricket team on first day of the first test evolved into ethical lows by the last day of the second test. The umpiring standards have touched new lows too. The series may no longer be interesting from the game’s point of view.

Forcing a result

27 Dec

I love watching Australia cricket team play. Even the (otherwise slow) test matches. Mainly because of the way they try to force a result. (The only counter example is the last test during India’s previous visit to Australia, where Steve Waugh et. al. played a painfully slow fourth innings.) Despite loosing 9 wickets on the first day, the Australia team went on to score 330+ runs on the first day. That would offset any delays due to rain, etc. and will force a result. Irrespective of who wins this test and the series, I am sure this approach by Australia would present a great series ahead.

SA cricket series win

29 Oct

Just now watched last few overs of the last ODI between South Africa and Pakistan. Very impressive series win by South Africa at the end! They are almost out of the game, but just persisted. As one of the commentators said: “Pakistan snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.”
