StarOffice on Singapore Airlines

13 Sep

[ Blog entry typed on Sep 08th and uploaded today ]

This blog entry is being typed on board Singapore Airlines flight SQ16 from Singapore to San Francisco using Sun’s StarOffice that is part of the in-flight software suite.

Once I boarded this Boeing 777, I am amazed. The seats are spacious, leg room is great and the personal LCD screen is big (12 inches). In addition to that, I spotted these video-in, USB and ethernet ports. Out of curiosity, i switched to the computing view and there it is, the familiar (on the desktop) view of StarOffice suite.

I knew that Singapore airlines started using StarOffice, but never realized that they got it to such a commodity level. It is great to see an office suite as part of the on-board computing infrastructure. Text entry is with the mini keyboard on the back of the remote and all files are stored on the USB stick.

Typing the text is not so easy but the mouse response is great. The monitor quality is same as my laptop. It is a great experience to be able to type blog entries on board the flight.

So what we are seeing here is an office suite appliance, that is sufficient to do lot of tasks for a traveller. The ideas can be documented there itself, the expenses can be documented in a spread sheet as opposed to on a paper. All this, even without opening the laptop and worrying about battery life.

Good job Singapore Airlines! I love this.

Busy US Trip

Got busier by the day during this US trip. Hence there are lot less blog entries, even though there is a lot to blog about. I am going to start with my travel first. Stay tuned!

On a business trip

07 Sep

I am heading out on a business trip for a couple of weeks. I will be working from Sun’s Menlo Park campus for most of the time during this trip. Will spend some time with old friends and relatives during the weekend there.

Most of the logistics for the trip are already taken care of. I am packing my bags at this time and also struggling with some last minute work.

Spurthi’s Birthday pics

02 Sep

This year, we wanted to celebrate Spurthi’s birthday on a low key. Last week itself we had a big get together of relatives and Surya is not very well for the last 5-6 days. So we wanted to make it a simpler day.

Finally, we ended up cutting two cakes, one after lunch and the other after dinner, as you can see here:

Spurthi2007BDay

For the lunch session RK, Sunitha and Sravya stopped by. For dinner session Madhu, Usha, Rohit and Rishita came by. My parents are visiting us and leaving for their hometown tonight after dinner.
The cake in the morning is sent by Sunitha and Ravi. This one is a juicy pineapple cake. The evening’s cake is the one we pre-ordered from JustBake. Spurthi wanted to have a pure chocolate cake for dinner. Both the cakes are very good and are enjoyed by kids and adults.

New Look IRCTC

02 Sep

The look and feel of IRCTC, the reservation portal for Indian Railways, is revamped. I logged in to this site after a couple of weeks and the new look is a pleasant surprise. Especially the home page is very simple, easy to navigae and above all, has lot less animations and advertisements. Once I login, the portal is relatively easy to work with. I love the new look.
