Spurthi’s Rank & Schoolday 2010

04 Dec

We got a call from Meridian school in the middle of the last week, stating that Spurthi stood first in the school rankings for the year 2009-2010. She top-ranked the team as per the overall CGPA informed a couple of days ago.

The school conducted an annual sports day today at Gachibowli stadium. We reached there by 2.15pm and settled down at a location with reasonable view. Surya reached school early in the morning, for his practice sessions for the dance program.

The school made elaborate arrangements for the event at the stadium. Prajnan Ojha, cricketer, is the guest on honor. Spurthi is given her medal and certificate in the first few minutes of the event.

Madhu also came by to wish Spurthi on the occassion. I also met a few friends there at the event: MSR, JRR, Vani and others.

All the sports day programs are very well organized. It took till about 7.30pm by the time the event is concluded with Jaya-Ho song.

After the event, we met with a few relatives of Latha for dinner. We had a fulfilling dinner and then headed home.

Really a great and memorable day for all of us…

10K Run 2010

29 Nov

This year, I am back at 10K run (I am down sick last year and 2008 is good). Spurthi started the preparations by inviting her friends. That made me start my planning at work. For the first time, we at NetEnrich wanted to do it as a formal corporate run (we always have participants in individual capacity). Within the last couple of days left for the corporate run registrations, we got decent number of participants signed up at work.

We collected our kits on Friday and distributed to participants at work. On the day of the run, Spurthi and myself started at about 6.15am and reached the start point by 6.45am. Parking was bit of a challenge, because most parking space is already taken. Finally managed to squeeze in my car near Prasad’s.

Our team members started assembling by 7.30. We unveiled our banner and started for the run by 8.15am. We did a short stretch of banner walk/run and then started running at our own pace. I could run for about 2-3km and I did a quick paced walk rest of the distance. I could cover the 8km in an hour and 10 minutes. It took me another 15 minutes to cover the two km beyond the corporate run’s end point. Our team members quickly met once again and then disbanded to their respective destinations.

This year’s run didn’t have that many fun activities throughout the stretch. However, special mention is due for Glucon-D, for their endless supply of their Isotonik energy drinks. I really liked their efforts and planning: well spaced throughout the 10km. Kingfisher water came in handy too. I also like the efforts of traffic police for ensuring well cordoned running stretch.

Once Spurthi and her friends are done with their run, we headed home munching breakfast.

Rains in Coastal Andhra, Cold wave in Hyderabad

01 Nov

Coastal Andhra is drenched in heavy rains in the last 60 hours. This is very unusual for the season and the area hasn’t seen such a continuous rain during the recent past. My parents tell me that they could barely get out of the home for 3 consecutive days. These rains have caused heavy losses to crops and the local micro-economies are going to take a considerable hit.

The weather pattern’s effect is felt well off the coast, even in Hyderabad. For the last 3 days, the temperatures have fallen and I took my winter jackets out. If this pattern continues through the week, it is going to be one of the coldest Diwalis in recent times.

Traffic Deadlocks

26 Aug

Wedensday evening is another traffic nightmare in the city. It took me more than an hour to reach home from work. In fact, I parked my car in an empty parking lot a couple of blocks away from home and walked home. By doing so, I might have saved at least another 30 minutes.

42.4

12 Apr

The temperature recorded in Hyderabad city on Sunday is 42.4 C (108.3 F). The day is very hot and our family very much stayed indoors. The tiredness from previous night’s party added to the woes. We had to go a bit low on spicy foods and meats. Rather stayed with lots of fruits, juices, ice creams and veg foods that are low in spices. I read that the temperatures are going to be like this for part of this week.

Ethics Questions

08 Apr

Let me present the scenario first. The time is about 8.30am and I am driving my good old M-800 to work. Already a bit late to work, I am revving the engine to its max. The moment I reached the main entrance of KBR park and headed towards the checkpost/Jubilee hills area (just to give you Hyderabadis a picture), I noticed that my car engine temperature is almost hitting the top. I slowed down and realized that the car is due for servicing. I pulled over into one of the empty parking lots of the KBR park. Mine is the lone vehicle there and the only other person in the parking bay is the guard in the security post.

Once I opened the hood, I found that the coolant tank has open lid and the leftover coolant from last top-up evaporated due to hot weather. I found a spare water bottle in my car and put the remaining water from it in the coolant tank. The tank started fuming from the hot steam from the engine fan. I needed more water to fill the engine fan, but ran out of water in my bottle. I gave an apologetic and requesting smile to the security guard who has been watching the whole fiasco. I told to him that I needed more water. he pointed me to the gardener who is watering the lawns with a rubber hose a couple of hundred yards from me.

Now comes the challenge. The gate to the fence between the parking and the lawns is already locked. The time now is about 8.35am and the gates close at 8.30am. I walked up to the gate, saw the lock and ended up in a dilemma. There is no shop in the next mile or so where I can buy a bottle of water. Leaving the car there and fetching it in the evening is an impractical solution. So I decided to jump over the gate and get water. I put my hands on the gate and gave another inquisitive look at the security guard. He understood the situation and gave a nod. My childhood skills from the countryside helped me hop over the gate. I reached the gardener, got water and filled the coolant tank. After a few thank-yous to the gardener and the security guard, I am back on the road, retrospecting on the whole episode.

Ethically, in that particular scenario:

  • Is it okay for me to consume a couple of liters of water from the park in that situation, from the hose that uses a few thousand liters a day to water the lawn?
  • Is it okay for me to jump over the gate when it is locked, barely 5-10 minutes after the visitors hours, despite getting the nod from the guard?

What do you think?

Spurthi’s last exam

01 Apr

Spurthi completed her Board exams on Wednesday. With the local situation a bit bad due to riots in old city, we had some tense moments on Wednesday, right from transportation from School to the exam center. Finally, everything went fine and we didn’t have any unwanted situations in this part of the city.
